Best screen time apps for iPhone in 2026
The useful split is blockers, delays, games, and journals. Pick the mechanism you will still use in March.
TLDR: Apple Screen Time is the base layer. one sec is the researched delay. ScreenZen, Opal, Forest, and Freedom cover free friction, schedules, trees, and hard blocks. Gratlock is the iPhone option that spends the pause on a gratitude sentence and keeps the journal on your phone.
What “best” means here
iPhone screen time tools live on Apple’s Screen Time / Family Controls system. That is why bypass stories show up on Reddit: if you can tap Ignore Limit, the app never had a chance. The 2026 roundups that hold up (including Habi’s tested list) sort tools by mechanism, not star ratings.
Self-set limits still matter. A 2022 AER randomized trial of about 2,000 people found those limits cut use by 22 minutes a day over 12 weeks: Allcott, Gentzkow, and Song.
1. Apple Screen Time (built in)
Free, on every iPhone. App Limits, Downtime, Always Allowed. Best for families and for a first experiment. Weak when you are both the parent and the teenager. Apple’s own guide: Use Screen Time.
2. one sec
A delay before the target app. The 2023 PNAS study found people abandoned 36% of gated opens: Grüning et al.. Best if a few seconds of breathing is enough. Less useful if you wait it out every time and still want something to keep. App Store: one sec. Site: one-sec.app.
3. ScreenZen
Donation-supported blocker with open friction. Often the first free try people recommend in 2026 lists. Best if you want customization without a subscription. Site: screenzen.co. App Store: ScreenZen.
4. Opal
Schedules and focus sessions. Best if your problem is work blocks, not late-night feeds. Paid tiers add more sessions. People on r/productivity mention it next to ScreenZen when they want structure, not a one-tap delay.
5. Forest
Grow a tree while you stay out of apps. Best if a game loop beats a lecture. Weak if you just let the tree die and open Instagram anyway.
6. Freedom
Cross-device blocks for sites and apps. Best for writers who need the laptop locked too. Heavier than a phone-only pause. Often listed in 2026 “must-try” roundups such as this Medium list.
7. Gratlock
Gratlock sits in a different slot. You pick distracting apps with Apple’s picker. On open, you write one grateful sentence. Apps unlock for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or the rest of the day. The journal stays on device. No account.
The delay science is the same family as one sec. The extra piece is gratitude. A 2025 PNAS meta-analysis of 145 studies (24,804 people) found a small, consistent wellbeing gain from gratitude practice: Choi et al..
Pricing: free 3-day trial, then $49.99/year or $7/week. App Store: Gratlock.
How to choose
- You only need a report: Apple Screen Time.
- You need a few seconds to change your mind: one sec.
- You need a free blocker: ScreenZen.
- You need calendars and sessions: Opal.
- You want the pause to become a journal: Gratlock.
None of these replace sleep, friends, or a walk. They change the first two seconds after you tap the icon that usually wins.
